Free Government Money!
Don’t lose out on money from the Government of Canada.
Saving for the future is not easy, but the Government of Canada can help by offering people with disabilities up to a lifetime maximum of $90,000. This money is deposited directly into a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) and can help people with disabilities and their families plan for the future.
Did you know that more than $1 billion in Canada Disability Savings Bonds and Grants have been deposited into eligible RDSPs since the program began in 2008, and over 100,000 Canadians are benefitting from the long-term savings features of the RDSP.
If you are eligible for the disability tax credit and are 49 years of age or under at the end of 2017, you could qualify to open a plan. See the next page to find out how to open an RDSP.
What is the bond?
The bond is money that the Government of Canada deposits automatically in an eligible individual’s RDSP. It is worth up to a lifetime maximum of $20,000.
-
No personal contributions are necessary!
-
It is designed for people with low to modest annual income (less than $45,916).
-
Each year, the bond could amount up to $1,000.
If you open an RDSP before the end of 2018, you could receive up to $11,000 in bond payments ($1,000 for each year of eligibility from 2008 to 2018).
What is the grant?
The grant is money that the Government of Canada will deposit into your RDSP to match personal contributions, up to a lifetime maximum of $70,000.
You could receive up to $3,500 per year, which is determined by the amount of personal contributions and your level of net family income.
Everyone qualifies for the grant; the lower your income the more grant money deposited.
If you open an RDSP before the end of 2018, your personal contributions could attract a maximum of $10,500 in matching grant for that year.
Act now. Open an RDSP early and watch your savings grow.
You have until December 31st of the year you turn 49 to receive bond and grant money from the Government of Canada.
Don’t worry!
If you were eligible for the DTC, you can still receive bond and grant money you may have missed from previous years when you did not have an RDSP. Get your RDSP application kit and claim bond and grant money for all the years you have been DTC eligible since 2008.
What about other government benefits?
Both the money paid out of an RDSP and the assets in the plan do NOT affect eligibility for federal benefits. All provinces have fully or partially exempted RDSP income and assets from the calculation for income assistance payments. Contact LifeTRUST Planning for more information.
What is it worth?
For example, let’s say you are 35, your annual family income is less than $30,000, and you have been eligible for the disability tax credit since 2008. If you open an RDSP in 2018, apply for the bond and grant, and make a contribution, you might be eligible to receive up to $13,000 in just one year.
Here is how to get $13,000 in 2018:
The bond money
Get $1,000 for each year you were eligible (from 2008 to 2018). That’s $11,000 in your RDSP without any personal contributions.
The grant money
Make a $500 contribution into your RDSP before December 31, 2018. Get $3 for every $1 you save – that’s an extra $1,500 in grant money deposited directly into your RDSP.
RDSP Total Value
By December 2018 your RDSP would have:
$ 11,000 in bond money
+ $ 1,500 in grant money
+ $ 500 of your own money (personal contribution)
= $ 13,000 in just one year.
